Koufonisia is known for its authentic hospitality, serene atmosphere and crystal-clear waters. However, this time Koufonisia became famous for another reason: the incredible generosity of a group of American tourists, who left a 500 euro tip on a bill of just 750 euros.
500 euro tip left for waiter at Koufonisia restaurant
The eight-member group from America arrived at the island by boat and decided to dine at a well-known seaside restaurant. Their meal included all the finest offerings: fresh lobsters, red snappers, sea bream, and of course plenty of wine and cocktails. Their bill came to 750 euros, however, when it came time to pay, they left the staff stunned: they added another 500 euros as a tip, bringing the final amount to 1,250 euros!
The incredible reaction of the Koufonisia waiter to the generous tip
The waiter who served the group, Giorgos Psarros, described the experience with enthusiasm on Nikos Manesis’s show: “I’m holding it and I can’t believe it. The banknote is real! I won’t sleep tonight, thank you Virgin Mary! The tip will be shared among all the staff, we are 22 people. Something like this has never happened before.”
This gesture caused emotion and smiles among the workers, as besides the financial relief, it represents a rare acknowledgment of their work. “It was a rare act of kindness and generosity,” commented the restaurant managers.
The incident once again highlighted the different culture surrounding tipping between Greeks and foreign tourists. In America, tipping is almost mandatory and considered an essential part of the experience, unlike in Greece, where amounts are usually more modest.
It’s no coincidence that Koufonisia has evolved in recent years into a popular high-end destination, attracting travelers who choose quality and luxury. This incident was not just a pleasant surprise for the island’s workers, but also a reminder of the value of good service.
