The minor had been swept far from shore and when found was wearing an inflatable life ring. A relative had notified the port authorities and the search operation began. A rescue operation was immediately launched by the Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center (EKSED), involving two Coast Guard vessels, a helicopter, and private boats. The girl was pulled unconscious from the sea and transported to Maroneia port where EKAB rescuers performed CPR until her transfer to Komotini General Hospital. There, doctors were unable to revive her despite their extensive efforts.
