One of the most profoundly human moments of the evening came with the story of the commander of Israel’s Fire and Rescue Service, and his personal tragedy. His son was killed during the October 7, 2023 massacre at a kibbutz, while trying to help and save others. His story served as a devastating reminder of the personal cost that can accompany the effort to rescue human lives. Since that day, as shared at the event, the commander has forever associated the image of fire with those tragic moments.
The ceremony also highlighted the long-standing cooperation between Greece and Israel in the field of firefighting and civil protection, a partnership that, as noted, dates back to 2010. Senior officers of the Hellenic Fire Corps expressed their gratitude for the collaboration, while reference was also made to the major wildfires that Israel has faced over the years.
