Alexis Tsipras described the Judicial Council’s decision to refer Christos Triantópoulos to a Special Court over the Tempi train disaster as a “ray of light.” Following this development in the case surrounding the deadly rail tragedy, the leader of the Greek Left Alliance (ELAS) launched a sharp attack on Tuesday afternoon (29/09) against Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis, demanding his resignation. If Floridis refuses to step down, Tsipras argued, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has an obligation to dismiss him.

Speaking directly on the matter, Alexis Tsipras stated: “I heard the Judicial Council’s decision. It is a ray of light in the dark days we are living through — a glimmer of hope for justice and accountability.
Justice will have its say, but the fact that someone is being called to account before the courts — rather than allowing the narrative to prevail that we Greeks don’t understand what we’re seeing and what is happening — is, in my view, a very significant step.
The person who should resign from his position after today’s decision, if he has even the most basic sense of political decency, is the Justice Minister.
I remind you that he addressed all of us who were saying what we plainly saw with an arrogant tone, using phrases like ‘those who talk about a cover-up belong in the rubble themselves.’
If he has even the most basic sense of political decency, Mr. Floridis must resign today.
If he does not resign, and if Mr. Mitsotakis has even the most basic sense of political dignity, he has an obligation to dismiss him.”
