«HTO STATEMENT
Regarding a report aired on Thursday, August 20, concerning a potential risk of solid organ transplants not being carried out due to a shortage of the required blood units, the Hellenic Transplant Organization (HTO), wishing to reassure prospective recipients, clarifies that no transplant has ever been lost due to a lack of blood, and that every possible effort is always made to ensure that all organs from domestic donors are transplanted to eligible recipients in Greece.
Transplantation falls under the category of emergency medical procedures and is prioritized accordingly, while cooperation with the National Blood Donation Centre (NBDC) and hospital blood banks has been and continues to be effective.
The HTO acknowledges the difficulties that arise for all medical procedures due to the reduced blood supply during the summer months, as well as the intensive efforts being made by all blood donation departments and the NBDC.
Both organ donation and blood donation stem from human selflessness and the willingness to help others, and the effort to sustain this spirit of giving must be ongoing».
