Inflation continued to decelerate for the third consecutive month in July, with the annual rate of price increases settling at 3.4%, down from 4.4% in June. In July 2025, the corresponding index had recorded an increase of 3.1%. The easing of inflation is attributed primarily to more moderate price increases in food and beverages, as well as in certain service categories. However, on an annual basis, price increases were recorded in fuels, with a sharper rise in diesel prices.

Specifically, in the food and beverages category, price increases were recorded in: Beef (14.3%), Lamb and goat (12.4%), Pork (3.4%), Poultry (2.2%), Salted and preserved fish (9.6%), Margarine and other vegetable fats (8.6%), Dairy products and eggs (2.9%), Bread and other bakery products (1.2%).
On the other hand, olive oil saw a significant price drop (21.7%), while decreases were also recorded in Fruits (9.4%), Vegetables (1.5%), Ice cream (8.8%), and Salt, sauces and condiments (-5.8%).
Price increases were also recorded in: Clothing and footwear (3.3%), Residential rents (6.8%), Housing repair and maintenance (4.8%), Miscellaneous home-related services (5.5%), Package holidays (6.2%), Restaurants, pastry shops, fast food outlets and cafeterias (6.4%), Health insurance premiums (7%), Vehicle insurance premiums (1.9%), and Hairdressers and personal care establishments (4.2%).
In the energy sector, the following annual price increases were recorded: Diesel (22%), Petrol/gasoline (13.3%), Natural gas (16.7%), Heating oil (53.2%), Solid fuels (4.1%). As a result, air passenger transport fares increased by 17.5%. Conversely, electricity prices fell by 2.8%.
On a monthly basis, between July and June 2026, price increases continued in, among others: Diesel (12.1%), Petrol/gasoline (0.3%), Air passenger transport (13.7%), Eggs (3.5%), Pork (2.0%), Cheese (1.0%), Electricity (0.6%) and Rents (0.3%).
On the other hand, in July prices fell in: Fruits (13.1%), Natural gas (3.7%), Lamb and goat (2.4%), Yogurt (2.9%), Vegetables (1.7%), Off-trade alcoholic beverages (1.5%), Recreational services (2.8%), and Travel goods and other personal items (3.3%).
As announced by ELSTAT (the Hellenic Statistical Authority), the increase in the general consumer price index in July was driven primarily by changes in the following groups of goods and services:
1. From increases in the indices by:
- 0.4% in the Food and non-alcoholic beverages group, due mainly to price increases in: bread and other bakery products, beef, pork, lamb and goat, poultry, salted and preserved fish, dairy products and eggs, margarine and other vegetable fats. Part of this increase was offset by price decreases mainly in: fresh or frozen fish, olive oil, fruits (general), vegetables (general), ice cream, salt-sauces-condiments.
- 3.3% in the Clothing and footwear group, due to price increases in clothing and footwear items.
- 8.8% in the Housing group, due mainly to price increases in: residential rents, housing repair and maintenance, miscellaneous home-related services, natural gas, heating oil, solid fuels. Part of this increase was offset by price decreases mainly in electricity.
- 0.4% in the Durable goods — Household items and services group, due mainly to price increases in: other household goods, domestic services. Part of this increase was offset by price decreases mainly in: household textiles, household appliances and repairs.
- 1.1% in the Health group, due mainly to price increases in: medical products, outpatient care services, hospital care. Part of this increase was offset by price decreases mainly in pharmaceutical products.
- 7.4% in the Transport group, due mainly to price increases in: diesel, motor vehicle fuels (petrol/gasoline), maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment, other services related to personal transport, and air passenger transport tickets. Part of this increase was offset by price decreases mainly in used vehicles.
- 1.3% in the Recreation, Sport and Culture group, due mainly to price increases in: gardening products and pets, cultural services, and package holidays.
- 2.8% in the Education group, due mainly to price increases in: pre-primary and primary education tuition fees, and secondary education tuition fees.
- 5.8% in the Hotels, Cafés and Restaurants group, due mainly to price increases in restaurants, pastry shops, fast food outlets and cafeterias. Part of this increase was offset by price decreases mainly in hotels, motels and inns.
- 3.4% in the Insurance and financial services group, due mainly to price increases in: health insurance premiums and vehicle insurance premiums.
- 1.1% in the Personal care, Social protection and other goods and services group, due mainly to price increases in: hairdressers and personal care establishments, and other services. Part of this increase was offset by price decreases mainly in: other personal hygiene and care appliances and products, and travel goods and other personal items.
2. From decreases in the indices by:
- 0.5% in the Alcoholic beverages and tobacco group, due mainly to price decreases in off-trade alcoholic beverages. * 2.7% in the Information and communication group, due mainly to price decreases in: information and communication equipment, mobile telephony services, and bundled telephone service packages.
Meanwhile, the general index recorded a monthly decrease of 1.4% in July 2026 compared to June 2026, whereas the corresponding comparison for the previous year showed an increase of 0.4%.
Regarding harmonized inflation, this rose by 2.7% in July, down from 3.9% in June and compared to an increase of 3.7% recorded in the corresponding comparison of July 2025 versus July 2024. On a monthly basis, July 2026 compared to June 2026 showed an increase of 1.4%, versus a decrease of 0.3% recorded in the corresponding comparison for the previous year.
