Seven internet users who were downloading or distributing child pornography material were identified by officers from the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate in Attica, Cyclades and Peloponnese. The police investigations were conducted as part of an operational action codenamed “FEVER III” which lasted two months. In May and June, cybercrime specialists tracked down the seven users, all men, who were identified through their digital footprints, despite the fact that they used anonymous browsers and the dark web.

In the presence of prosecutors, police teams conducted raids on the suspects’ homes, where seven mobile phones, two SIM cards, two laptops, six hard drives and one memory card were confiscated. In total, seven separate case files were created, since these are not flagrant crimes, and now the defendants will be called to give their explanations during the trial of their cases. Unless critical evidence emerges that would lead the investigator to issue an arrest warrant for fear that one of the defendants might flee the country.
It is worth noting that the Cybercrime Prosecution action was implemented following information provided by foreign services, which had detected digital traces of pedophiles leading to Greece. Data analysis and digital evidence management led police to identify the seven perpetrators. According to sources, none of them have been involved in the same crime in the past, however police are examining their contacts as they do not rule out that they may be members of groups that exchange or even sell child pornography material.
The material found on hard drives, mobile phones and laptops will be analyzed to determine whether it originates from Greece.
