Nigrita prison Serres: How the attack with makeshift knives happened
Everything started when correctional officers removed four inmates from cell 9 for yard time. In the disciplinary wing there are four cells with a corridor in front for exercise. The 4 inmates broke the locks of cells 4 and 8 and released the prisoners who were held there.
Subsequently, all together, approximately ten people, headed to cell 6, where two men were held – a 46-year-old from Palestine and a 43-year-old from Iraq, with whom they had disputes. They attacked them with makeshift knives, which it is unknown how they obtained. It’s worth noting that in the same cell there was also another Greek inmate, whom they did not harm.

Despite intervention by correctional staff, who tried to separate those involved and prevent greater conflict, ultimately one of the targeted inmates died in the prison, while the second was transferred to the city hospital, where his death was confirmed. Subsequently, a coroner was called to the scene, while the competent prosecutor was also notified.
Preliminary investigation underway
A preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Security Subdirectorate of Serres for the double homicide, while at the same time, a disciplinary investigation has been ordered to examine the circumstances of the incident, and specifically how the inmates managed to acquire makeshift knives and break the cell locks, without their actions being prevented.
