Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis has sent a formal letter to the Chair of the Parliamentary Ethics Committee, Giorgos Georgandas, requesting an examination of whether the speech delivered by Dimitris Kyriazidis and his remarks directed at Zoe Konstantopoulou are consistent with the Code of Parliamentary Conduct.
Specifically, following comments made by the New Democracy MP for Drama — who referred to his earlier remark to the leader of Plefsi Eleftherias that she should “have a child” as “a blessing” — and amid backlash from even members of his own New Democracy party, the Parliament Speaker has formally referred him to the Ethics Committee.
In his letter, Nikitas Kaklamanis describes the speech as one that “undermines the dignity of the parliamentary institution” and notes that it caused “heightened tension during the session” on the Ministry of Culture’s draft legislation.
