US President Donald Trump will attend the 2026 World Cup final, set to take place on Sunday between Spain and defending champions Argentina, the White House has confirmed.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt announced that the American president will travel to New York on Friday to attend a FIFA event at Trump Tower, before heading to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to watch the grand final.
Trump’s attendance had been previously signaled by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who stated that the two would watch the match together and present the trophy to the winning team.
The presence of heads of state at World Cup finals is a well-established tradition, with several leaders having participated in trophy ceremonies at previous tournaments, including the 2022 edition in Qatar and the 2018 tournament in Russia.
Trump has not attended any other World Cup match this year
Until now, neither Trump nor Vice President JD Vance had attended any matches at this year’s tournament, which is co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, other members of the US government have made appearances at matches involving the American national team.
“The president’s presence will be the capstone of what has been the most successful, safe, and most-watched World Cup ever held in America,” Levitt said.
In recent years, Donald Trump has attended a number of major sporting events in person, including the Super Bowl, the US Open, the Ryder Cup, the Daytona 500, and UFC events. Last summer, he also attended the Club World Cup final, where he took part in the trophy presentation ceremony for Chelsea.
Trump’s relationship with FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, remains close, with the two men having appeared together at several events organized by the global football governing body.
