The leader of Greek Solution, Kyriakos Velopoulos, launched a fierce attack on the government following the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) prosecutions, stating characteristically: “Until yesterday you were telling us there was no scandal at OPEKEPE, but now you’ll drink bitter coffee.” Speaking in Parliament during the debate on the artificial intelligence bill, he also denounced what he called “digital bureaucracy” instead of genuine state modernization, accusing the government of using the digital age as “bait” to trap citizens in total surveillance.
“Your plan is moving forward as intended. You will impose Orwellian control. Anyone who inconveniences you will have their electricity cut off, their internet, their salary, their pension,” he stated pointedly.
Velopoulos: Digital currency is a “digital prison” and Europe is heading toward “euro-Hitlerism”
Kyriakos Velopoulos presented the promotion of digital currency as a major threat, launching a sharp critique against international financial institutions. As he stated:
“The European Central Bank and the Fed are pushing for the creation of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), which are under the control of central banks, with the ability to program and monitor transactions. This means they will know everything — they will know everything we buy. This is a prison.”
According to the Greek Solution press office, the party leader warned of the dark prospects opening up for society, calling on the Greek Parliament to take a stand:
“Difficult days are coming for all of humanity. Let the Greek Parliament not allow this to happen in our country. We are heading toward a euro-Hitlerism. Democracy will mutate into a puppet show, where certain elites will invisibly hold the technological power to manipulate citizens and voters. We, as Greek Solution, will fight to prevent these anti-democratic developments.”
Strong reaction to the personal ID number and the “abolition of anonymity”
In the same vein, Mr. Velopoulos expressed his outright opposition to the introduction of a personal identification number for every citizen, outlining the risks this development poses to individual freedoms:
“Why don’t we want a personal ID number? Because with a personal ID number there is no anonymity. It creates a permanent record of every aspect of our lives — from purchases and movements to medical procedures and social interactions. Because it is an irreversible digital file. Because it imposes extreme dependency on the state or on private entities cooperating with the state.”
Later in his address, the Greek Solution leader brought a current Financial Times article to the floor of Parliament, submitting it to the official records, and accused the Prime Minister of selectively protecting specific interests:
“Mitsotakis vetoes new sanctions against Russia, but only for the benefit of shipowner Prokopiou — not for the Greek farmer. Yet when it came to vetoing sanctions in order to demand equivalent measures against Turkey, he said not a word.”
On Mitsotakis and Tsipras: “Two sides of the same coin”
Turning to the domestic political landscape, Kyriakos Velopoulos delivered a scathing critique of Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Alexis Tsipras, arguing that their opposition to each other is purely performative:
“They are two sides of the same coin… they pretend to be in constant conflict, but they cooperate. One signs, and the other implements, because as they say, the state has continuity. Each one needs the other to play the role of opponent, but in practice they do the same job.”
“Bitter coffee” over the EPPO prosecutions in the OPEKEPE case
The European Public Prosecutor’s Office announcement regarding criminal prosecutions in the OPEKEPE case formed the centerpiece of Mr. Velopoulos’s attack on the ruling party:
“But the reckoning has arrived. The European Public Prosecutor’s Office is pressing criminal charges against 4 sitting members of Parliament over OPEKEPE. So now what? What happens now? Until yesterday you were telling us there was no OPEKEPE scandal. But now you’ll drink bitter coffee.”
Closing his address, the Greek Solution leader emphasized that the entire political establishment is controlled, presenting his party as the only genuine alternative: “The entire political system is subservient to the oligarchy… only we have no ties whatsoever to oligarchs and shipowners… the only constant in Greek democracy is Greek Solution.”
