Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has revealed that he sent his wife Evgenia Manolidou and their children out of Greece during the summer of 2015, describing the intense fears he harbored at the time about the country’s future. Speaking on Monday morning (6/7) on the television program “Simera,” Georgiadis stated that, gripped by the fear of a potential Grexit, he made the decision to send his family to the United States, believing the situation had reached a critical breaking point.

The minister went on to describe in detail the steps he took immediately after casting his vote in the referendum, underscoring the gravity with which he viewed the political developments unfolding at the time. Specifically, Adonis Georgiadis stated: “Eleven years ago, on this very day, I had gone in the morning to vote in the referendum with Evgenia. I voted ‘Yes,’ of course. At the time, our son Alkaios was less than one and a half years old. I took him, along with Perseus, Theodora, and Alexandros — our children — and Evgenia, to the airport and sent them to America.”

Continuing his remarks, the minister explained the reasoning behind his decision, focusing on the assessments he made during those critical hours regarding social stability and cohesion.
“I was certain we were going to lose, and I kept thinking that if we left the euro, there would be a civil war in Greece. With a baby in my arms, they would have slaughtered me. You still haven’t realized what we were saved from…” he said pointedly, adding further personal and family details about how he experienced the atmosphere of that defining period.
