Greece is facing one of the most intense and prolonged heat wave episodes in recent years. Since Monday, July 20th, the thermal burden has exceeded normal limits, with meteo.gr warning of extreme conditions posing serious risks to public health. The HEAT-ALARM system sounds the danger alert for July 22nd and 23rd, where temperatures combined with the absence of northern winds and zero nighttime cooling make the environment suffocating, especially in urban centers.
Vulnerable groups, the elderly, children and outdoor workers face increased risk. Even healthy citizens are advised to limit their movements and take protective measures. Special attention is required in the Aegean islands, where the usual meltemi winds are absent, intensifying thermal stress. The only hope for relief appears to be sea breezes in coastal areas.
The situation is not simply a matter of discomfort – it’s a health and safety issue. Information and prevention are the strongest weapons against this threatening heat wave spreading across the country.
Heat wave: Warning from high temperatures
According to meteo, there is a serious heat wave episode underway.

An intense heat wave episode has been affecting our country since Monday, July 20th. Tuesday, July 22nd and Wednesday, July 23rd are forecast to bring adverse bio-meteorological conditions, while the thermal burden is expected to persist until Saturday, July 26th.
–Intense and prolonged thermal burden across the entire country: Both days (July 22nd & 23rd) are expected to bring high to extreme levels of thermal burden throughout the country, with long duration (over 6 hours) in many areas and absence of nighttime cooling, especially in urban centers. Health risks are increased even for healthy individuals without adequate protection.
–Lack of cooling in the Aegean: A significant factor intensifying the burden on Tuesday, July 22nd and Wednesday, July 23rd, even in the Aegean islands, including the Cyclades and Crete, is the absence of northern winds (meltemi).

–Beneficial effect of sea breeze: Coastal areas, such as Southern Athens, Piraeus and Patras, are expected to show relatively milder conditions of daytime thermal burden on both days (July 22nd & 23rd) due to the presence of sea breezes, which provide local cooling.
–Protection measures: Limit outdoor movements during hot hours – Drink water frequently even if you’re not thirsty – Stay in shaded or cool areas – Contact elderly people or those living alone.
