Consecutive operations have been conducted almost daily over the past 20 days by officers from the Special Anti-Crime Unit (OPKE), DIAS motorcycle police, and the Drug Enforcement Division in Western Attica in an effort to tackle the major issue of drug trafficking and petty crime. Arrests follow one after another, while drugs, jewelry, and other confiscated items were found in possession of Roma perpetrators.

In the police operations, exclusive footage of which is revealed by parapolitika.gr, prosecutorial officials also participate to ensure legal compliance. As shown in the videos, fully armed police officers, taking all necessary safety measures, enter the homes of traffickers and criminals. Using a “battering ram,” they break down doors of drug dealers and burst in searching for perpetrators about whom there is specific intelligence regarding substance trafficking. OPKE officers conduct street checks on suspects, individuals believed to be connected to drug trafficking. They search the bags they carry.
Within just 20 days, police conducted 12 targeted special operations. The police operations were carried out at five houses and against specific individuals for whom concrete incriminating evidence had emerged. Seventeen Roma were arrested, while 44.7 grams of heroin, small amounts of cocaine, 21 narcotic pills, a marine flare, and cash amounting to 7,973 euros were seized.

The situation in Western Attica areas now presents a completely different picture from the conditions that prevailed until early this year. The presence of drug addicts on the streets of Zefyri, Menidi -and other “known” areas for drug sales- has decreased dramatically, as police patrols are now almost continuous. Combined with the mass transit policing program, where plainclothes officers board buses as passengers on Western Attica routes and arrest pickpockets, drug dealers, troublemakers, and criminals of all kinds, the image of long-suffering Western Attica appears to be gradually changing.
