George Tsoumas was elected vice president of the Young European Socialists (YES) during the organization’s 17th Congress held in Paris.
According to a PASOK announcement, his election marks a significant moment for the younger generation of European social democracy and for Greek presence in the European political bodies of the Socialist and Social Democratic family. His candidacy was supported by numerous organizations and representatives, recognizing his political presence and organizational contribution both nationally and internationally.
George Tsoumas is the Coordinator of PASOK Youth and Coordinator of the Peace and Democracy Network of the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY). He plays an active role in struggles for social justice, youth rights, strengthening democracy, and European integration with a progressive approach.
In his speech before the Congress, George Tsoumas highlighted the weight of historical responsibility carried by the new generation of European Socialists in an era of crises, insecurity, and war:
“In an era of uncertainty, crises, war, and insecurity, we — the young socialists of Europe — carry a historical responsibility: to bring passion and hope back to politics. Not as a poorly performed show but as a genuine collective commitment to justice, dignity, and freedom.”
He emphasized the need for producing politics with vision and sincerity that will restore young people’s trust in institutions and social democratic parties. He spoke clearly about youth fatigue with empty words and the importance of action:
“Our generation is tired of empty words. What matters now is action. We must be steadfast in our struggles — for equality, workers’ and migrants’ rights, for a sustainable, feminist, democratic, radical socialism in a Europe shaped by these values. Not theoretically but with a plan, with daily struggle.”
Furthermore, he underlined that the great battle of our time is between democracy and authoritarianism, noting that the far-right does not wait and authoritarian leaders do not hesitate — therefore neither can we remain passive.
His speech closed on a personal note: “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes in the struggle to do things your own way. And have the courage to apologize or forgive and simply continue the fight,” he characteristically stated.
George Tsoumas’s election strengthens the voice of Greek social democracy in European political youth and sends the message that the new generation is present, with words and deeds, to build a more just, democratic, and humane Europe.
