Evidence from the case of six minors found living under deplorable conditions in a house in Peristeri has come to light, showing the tragic state of the apartment filled with filth and squalor. The images were broadcast by “Apokalypseis” and reveal the conditions in which the large family was living.
Peristeri: Testimony from Lipsi resident where the family previously lived
A resident of Lipsi, where the family previously lived, claimed that the mother has been severely abused by her father, resulting in mental health issues.
“Listen, she didn’t go crazy on her own. Her father was a very harsh man, he beat them a lot in his younger days and recently he has calmed down because he’s sick and bedridden. But he’s extremely irritable and his behavior toward his children and this girl is very bad, because her father drove her crazy, meaning he led her to this point,” he characteristically told the ANT1 show.
He then stated that Lipsi residents helped the family by bringing clothes and food, which the parents would throw out on the street.
“Appearance has nothing to do with finances. I swear to you, people here helped, people brought clothes and food to them. The clothes were left to rot outside their house. The children went to school without jackets, even though they had been given clothes – they had been given so many clothes and they threw them away. The school principal forced the grandmother to take the children for baths at least once a week and make sure they went to school,” he told “Apokalypseis.”
16-month suspended sentence for both parents
The court imposed a 16-month suspended prison sentence on the parents who were arrested after the revelation of the deplorable living conditions of their six children in Peristeri. The court found the two parents, aged 37 and 33, guilty of endangering minors as a misdemeanor offense, and the 16-month sentence imposed on each is convertible at 10 euros per day.
An anonymous tip led authorities to the 27-square-meter rooftop apartment in Peristeri, where the couple lived with their six children, aged 3 to 11 years old. The inspection revealed that the large family was living in a house of just a few square meters under unacceptable sanitary conditions. The six children remain at Aglaia Kyriakou Children’s Hospital for medical examinations while foster care is being sought.
