US President Donald Trump announced Thursday that the United States would retaliate by imposing a “major customs tariff” on the UK if its government continues to target, in his view, American technology giants—such as Apple, Google (Alphabet) and Facebook (Meta)—with its digital services tax.
The UK implemented its digital services tax (2%) in 2020. This measure has been heavily and repeatedly criticized by Republican President Trump, as well as by his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden.
“If they don’t eliminate the tax, we will probably impose a major tariff on the UK,” the US president told reporters at the White House.
He made this threat just 24 hours before King Charles’s visit to the US next week.
According to the Republican billionaire’s view, the British monarch—formally the head of state—could help restore the bilateral relationship, which has experienced unusual tensions in recent months.
