Indian authorities are calling it a strange coincidence and investigating all possibilities after a major fire broke out on Monday afternoon (20/4) at the Rajasthan refinery, just one day before its scheduled inauguration by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Specifically, according to NDTV reports, the fire erupted in the CDU (Crude Distillation Unit) section of the refinery, with no casualties reported. Dozens of fire trucks rushed to the scene to extinguish the blaze. Workers activated the fire safety system in an attempt to bring it under control.

The refinery is India’s first brand-new integrated refinery and petrochemical complex in Pachpadra, Barmer, and represents a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and the Rajasthan government. It is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening India’s energy security by reducing import dependence and enhancing domestic production capabilities.
