An unspeakable tragedy has shocked Italy, with a 12-year-old child losing his life after his foot became trapped in a jacuzzi suction drain, causing his death. The fatal incident occurred around 10:30 AM last Catholic Easter Sunday, when Matteo was with his parents at the hotel spa in the Italian town of Pennabilli.
Tragedy in Italy with death of 12-year-old: Trapped underwater for 5 minutes
It all began when the 12-year-old’s foot was sucked into the drain while the hydromassage system was operating. Under unclear circumstances, the child’s foot became trapped in the suction opening of the facility, resulting in him being trapped underwater. According to reports, the minor remained submerged for nearly five minutes.
In order to free the child, hotel staff cut off the power supply. Rescuers immediately rushed to the scene, who found the child in critical condition and began CPR attempts. Doctors managed to revive the minor and decided to airlift him to a hospital by helicopter. The 12-year-old was intubated and placed on mechanical support, however on April 9th he was declared brain dead.
Parents decided to donate the 12-year-old’s organs
Meanwhile, the parents of the unfortunate child decided to donate his organs. Specifically, the family’s lawyer, Umberto Gramenzi, stated that the child’s parents, Maurizio and Nicoletta, after being informed on April 9th that their child was brain dead, gave their consent for organ donation.
The prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation for manslaughter through negligence, without charges being filed against specific individuals so far. The pool and spa facilities area remains closed in recent days, while technical inspections continue.
