New Democracy MP for Serres, Tasos Hatzivassiliou, categorically denied any illegal involvement in the OPEKEPE case on Tuesday, April 7th, following the transmission of a European Public Prosecutor’s Office file to Parliament. “I am being investigated for a crime that was not committed, I have confidence in Greek justice,” Hatzivassiliou emphasized in his announcement, while also requesting the “waiver of his immunity.” He further stated that “last year I resigned from the government for reasons of political integrity, as the first OPEKEPE file contained reference to a phone communication of mine, which ultimately had no criminal interest. Today, the same case returns without new evidence having emerged.”

“I am being investigated for a crime that was not committed. I have confidence in Greek justice.
Last year, I resigned from the government for reasons of political integrity, as the first OPEKEPE file contained reference to a phone communication of mine, which ultimately had no criminal interest. Today, the same case returns without new evidence having emerged.
I remind that this specific communication from 2021 is not related to the subject of economic fraud and illegal subsidies being investigated by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
As an MP for Serres, a predominantly agricultural area, I wanted to seek legal possibilities for transferring rights between married farmers, for reasons of force majeure (wife’s pregnancy), based on relevant national provisions.
I clarify that the interested parties legally submitted the relevant request, as they had the right to do. Ultimately, this transfer application between spouses was REJECTED by the services.
This is the reality and cannot be disputed.
I request the waiver of my immunity, so that this case can be closed. The file contains unfounded speculation, on which I will comment appropriately. I have confidence in Greek justice.
