The health condition of the 2-year-old girl hospitalized at the “Agia Sophia” Children’s Hospital has improved after suffering serious injuries from dog bites to her face and head. The girl was transferred on Monday afternoon, April 6th, with police escort to the “Agia Sophia” Children’s Hospital with very deep facial wounds following the attack by a dog that, according to her parents’ statement, belonged to the family.
The minor child escaped her grandmother’s attention – who is of Dutch origin – and entered a room where the dog was located, which then bit and injured her head. The incident occurred in the afternoon at 4:50 PM on Maria Chatzikyriakos Street 126A, in Piraeus, inside an apartment. The child was transported to “Agia Sophia” Children’s Hospital, accompanied by the DIAS police unit, while the grandmother was arrested and taken to the Municipal Theater Police Station.
Michalis Giannakos: Child’s life was in danger after dog attack
According to POEDIN president Michalis Giannakos, the child’s life was in danger and the hospital staff made tremendous efforts to save her.
Initially, she was admitted to the neurosurgical clinic and immediately underwent surgery involving both neurosurgeons and plastic surgeons. The surgery was particularly difficult, lasting over 4 hours. After completion, the child’s condition was serious as she was intubated and admitted to the ICU.
The good news is that today the girl’s health shows rapid improvement and she is expected to return to the neurosurgical clinic.
