A total of 419 unemployed people have been hired through a new employment initiative by the Public Employment Service (DYPA), implemented as part of the comprehensive Just Development Transition (JDT) action plan for Western Macedonia and Megalopolis (including neighboring municipalities of Tripoli, Oichalia and Gortynia), areas affected by the phase-out of coal mining.
Greece creates over 400 subsidized jobs in post-coal transition areas – Program with total budget of €10.7 million
The new “special program for subsidizing businesses to employ unemployed workers, former employees of companies affected by coal phase-out in the Territorial Just Development Transition Plans (TJDTP) of Western Macedonia and Megalopolis,” with a total budget of €10.7 million, subsidizes companies to create 1,000 new full-time jobs for hiring unemployed workers.
The subsidy duration is 12 months and ranges from 70% of salary and contributions for regular unemployed workers (€829.50 monthly, €9,954 total) up to 100% for unemployed workers who fall under the JDT definition (€1,185 monthly, €14,220 total), meaning those who worked for any period in declining sectors (examples: basic and supporting lignite mining activities, conventional electricity generation activities, etc.) and transforming sectors (examples: electricity distribution and trading activities).
Multiple initiatives
Over the past five years, DYPA, as a member of the JDT Coordination Committee, has implemented numerous employment and training initiatives in Western Macedonia, significantly strengthening the labor market and society.
Specifically, according to a related announcement, over 16,300 unemployed people found work through DYPA employment programs, of which 61% were women, 51% young people (up to 29 years old) and 37% long-term unemployed. Additionally, 21,228 unemployed and employed people participated in training initiatives, of which 68% were women and 21% young people.
The initiative is co-financed by the European Union’s Just Transition Fund and national participation, with total co-financed public expenditure amounting to €10,726,800.
