Authorities launched a wave of arrests following a migrant riot at the Kleidi Reception Center in Sintiki, Serres, on the night of Saturday, August 22. Following a mass escape attempt by a group of foreign nationals, authorities arrested a total of 17 migrants housed at the facility.
Serres: Incidents at the Kleidi Sintiki Reception Center
The unrest broke out at approximately 9:00 PM, when a group of individuals caused damage to the facilities of the Kleidi Reception Center in Sintiki, Serres, hurling stones at police officers on duty. The group then cut through the wire mesh fencing and managed to escape from the facility.
Officers detained three individuals on the spot, while another 14 were located shortly afterward in the surrounding area and were arrested and returned to the center.
Those arrested to appear before a prosecutor
During the clashes, damage was caused to the facility and to a police service vehicle, while five people were injured. Three of the injured were transferred to Serres General Hospital for medical treatment and subsequently returned to the center.
One of those arrested faces charges of escape from custody. The other two foreign nationals remained hospitalized with minor injuries. All 17 arrested individuals are expected to be brought before a public prosecutor.
