Transport and Infrastructure Minister Christos Dimas discussed the possibility of following Thessaloniki’s model and creating a Flyover on Kifissos Avenue to provide relief from Athens’ traffic chaos. “Kifissos definitely needs significant interventions, which is why we are examining several different scenarios. A successful example is the elevated highway in Thessaloniki, which doubles the volume of cars that can be served per hour, from 5,000 to 10,000 vehicles. This is a truly innovative project that is progressing rapidly and has already significantly reduced congestion there,” said Mr. Dimas, speaking to ERT.
Dimas on traffic: Thessaloniki’s example
Regarding the construction period, he emphasized that there is skepticism about what will happen in Athens, but Thessaloniki’s experience, as he said, shows that interventions work.
He also reminded that, alongside the elevated highway, Thessaloniki started metro operations, while measures were taken by Traffic Police and Local Government Organizations.
“Citizens see the 10-11 construction sites on the ring road daily and understand the progress of the works, despite the inconvenience during construction,” he noted.
At the same time, as he clarified, “we will see initiatives for law enforcement, tackling illegal parking and strengthening road safety. The new Traffic Code that was passed six months ago tightens penalties, while smart cameras are being installed for violations and monitoring uninsured vehicles or those without MOT certificates,” he stated.
