In a preliminary conclusion about the causes of the train crash that occurred in Spain last Sunday, the Railway Accident Investigation Commission (CIAF) released its initial report today, Friday (23/1). Specifically, according to the preliminary CIAF report, the track crack appears to have occurred before the high-speed train derailment in Adamuz.
It should be noted that the railway disaster claimed the lives of 45 people – one of the worst train accidents in Europe. The first train, operated by private consortium Iryo, derailed and collided with another high-speed train from state railway company Renfe coming from the opposite direction.
“Based on the information available at this time, it can be assumed that the rail crack occurred before the Iryo train involved in the accident passed through and, therefore, before the derailment,” the CIAF report notes, which was published on the organization’s website, according to Reuters.
Spain: Train drivers declare three-day nationwide strike
It should be recalled that the train drivers’ union Semaf has declared a nationwide strike from February 9 to 11, denouncing repeated safety failures.
A second railway accident occurred on Tuesday (20/01), where a train driver lost his life and 37 people were injured when a suburban train crashed into a retaining wall that fell onto the tracks near Barcelona, in the northeastern region of Catalonia.
The list of incidents grew on Thursday, when a suburban train in the southeastern region of Murcia crashed into a crane mounted on a truck, resulting in six minor injuries, escalating public reactions.
