The public appearance of Kim Jong Un at the inauguration of a major hot springs resort in northeastern North Korea has caused quite a stir. The country’s leader, dressed in a warm jacket, attended the ceremony and spoke about the project as a “wonderful” vacation retreat for the people, following years of renovation.
Videos and photos from the visit, broadcast by state media, show Kim Jong Un touring the facilities and even entering rooms where citizens were enjoying the hot springs. This image, with him closely observing the resort’s operation, fits into his well-known publicity tactic of presenting himself as a leader who stands alongside his people.
Kim Jong Un and hot springs take center stage
The inauguration ceremony of the Onpho Workers’ Holiday Camp took place yesterday, according to the Korean Central News Agency. The Onpho resort, in North Hamgyong province, is characterized as the largest hot springs resort in North Korea and represents one of the projects that the leader himself had prioritized.
In July 2018, Kim Jong Un had ordered a radical renovation of the facility, requesting its transformation into a comprehensive service center with therapeutic facilities. At the time, he had strongly criticized the poor management and unsanitary conditions that prevailed at the old resort.

Resort and message to the people
After his tour of the renovated complex, the North Korean leader stated that all sections of the camping center are arranged in a balanced way and that its architectural elements are in harmony with the natural environment. According to state media, he mentioned feeling proud to have contributed to creating another valuable project for the people.
Kim ordered resort officials to prepare fully for its operation, with the goal of opening it to the public in February.
