The acquisition of Kritikos by the Masoutis group appears set to act as a catalyst for the next phase of restructuring in organized food retail within a market that is already moving at accelerated speeds with an intense consolidation trend. Specifically, the environment in which this move takes place is initially favorable in terms of demand. According to the latest NielsenIQ data for the entire 2025, the turnover of organized food retail increased by 7.1%, with total sales reaching 16.2 billion euros. The largest portion of the revenue increase came from volume sales growth rather than price increases, which were nonetheless present throughout 2025, mainly in the food and beverage category, which contributes over 80% of chain store revenues. Specifically, the growth was not uniform last year as fresh and bulk products recorded the largest value enhancement, with an increase above 10%, followed by the categories of bazaar-household items, clothing, toys and small appliances-with an increase close to 9.6%.
