According to euronews, the 25 founding members of the council include all countries that participated in the historic Sharm El-Sheikh ceremony, such as France, Canada, Gulf states, and Turkey.
The participation of Greece and Cyprus in this new body highlights the enhancement of their presence and role both internationally and in developments in the broader Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region.
Letter to Erdogan for “Peace Council” participation
Earlier, the Turkish presidency announced that Donald Trump sent a letter to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, inviting him to participate in the same “Peace Council.”
As part of implementing the second phase of the American President’s peace plan for Gaza, the establishment of the Peace Council is envisioned, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2803.
The Council serves as the competent body for international oversight of the transitional process and supporting stabilization efforts aimed at full implementation of the agreement.
To support the next phase of the peace plan, two transitional bodies have been established to strengthen the Council’s role: the Executive Committee, responsible for implementing the political and operational parameters of the Gaza agreement, and the Palestinian national technocratic committee, which will be responsible for Gaza’s interim administration during the transitional period.
Former Bulgarian diplomat N. Mladenov has been appointed as High Representative to coordinate the transitional bodies and the Peace Council.
