Scenes reminiscent of last summer are being recorded at the Agyia exhibition center in Crete, as continuous arrivals of migrants from the northern coasts of Africa have significantly increased the number of people being accommodated.
According to parakritika.gr, the facility is now accommodating over 720 people. To the initial 61, 501 migrants rescued from a fishing vessel south of Gavdos were added, along with another 60 individuals, while the arrival of an additional 131 is expected, further raising the total number.
Dr. Stefanos Doukakis and his team are constantly on standby, providing medical care and conducting examinations of the migrants. At the same time, the Municipality of Chania is making significant efforts to cover basic accommodation needs.
According to competent authorities, the gradual transfer of those accommodated to the mainland is expected to begin within the next 24 hours.
