Trade union organizations have sent complaints to the Minister of Citizen Protection and the leadership of the Hellenic Police regarding unacceptable and dangerous working conditions for police officers guarding the closed facility at Kleidi, Serres. This is the same facility where serious incidents occurred approximately two weeks ago involving around 800 foreign nationals residing at the Migration Center, and thanks to the extraordinary efforts of OPKE police officers and other services, a mass escape of illegal migrants was prevented.
Migrant facility in Serres: The shortages and problems
Workers at this facility report that their working conditions are unacceptable. “Administrative care is limited to plastic bags and chairs as substitutes for basic protection of their physical integrity from any threats as well as weather conditions,” according to a statement released earlier today. These are the chairs, exclusively presented by parapolitika.gr, that security personnel use to rest during their shifts. To avoid getting wet, police officers use bags, as characteristically shown in the photographs.
What they are requesting is essentially material and organizational support, since this is a facility that was previously open and only a few months ago was converted, at least on paper, into a closed facility. It’s not just the lack of security cages, but there are issues both with the Migration Center’s fence, which is inadequate, and with the number of police officers serving on a daily basis who are called upon to ensure the safety of 800 migrants as well as themselves.
