A 48-year-old man from Boston has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old passenger aboard a JetBlue flight, repeatedly groping the minor while traveling with his wife and their four children. The incident occurred on August 30, 2024, on a flight from Puerto Rico to Boston, with the teenage girl managing to photograph the man’s hand as he touched her without her consent. Jonathan Alan Lefman was found guilty following a three-day jury trial, and his sentencing has been scheduled for January 12, 2027.

Boston: how the 17-year-old discovered the assault on the plane
According to evidence presented by the Massachusetts federal prosecutor’s office, the 48-year-old was seated directly behind the minor and, during the flight, slipped his hand between the back and bottom of her seat. From that position, he repeatedly touched her buttocks without her consent. The 17-year-old realized what was happening when she spotted the reflection of the man’s movements on the seat-back monitor in front of her, and she was able to photograph his fingers protruding from beneath her seat using her phone.
A particularly disturbing detail of the case is that the 48-year-old was traveling with his family at the time. According to the sworn affidavit accompanying the criminal complaint, his 16-year-old son was seated directly next to him, on his left side, while the acts for which he was convicted were taking place.
The complaint after landing and the 48-year-old’s explanations
After the aircraft landed and passengers had disembarked, an adult female relative of the 17-year-old, who had been seated in a different row, confronted Lefman about his behavior. She then reported the incident to a JetBlue supervisor, presenting the footage the minor had captured, which clearly showed the man’s fingers.
Lefman, who lives in Newton, Massachusetts, in a property reportedly valued at $2.3 million, claimed he had simply been stretching and apologized. When investigators showed him the image and asked whether he recognized the fingers visible in it, he replied, “Not really.” His explanations did nothing to halt the criminal proceedings, which concluded with the jury’s guilty verdict.

The conviction and the sentence he faces
Jonathan Alan Lefman was found guilty on one count of abusive sexual contact within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States. The verdict was announced on Thursday by the Massachusetts federal prosecutor’s office following the conclusion of the three-day trial. Sentencing has been set for January 12, 2027, with the convicted man facing up to two years in prison, supervised release ranging from five years to life, and a maximum fine of $250,000. US Attorney Leah B. Foley stated: “The defendant repeatedly sexually abused a minor who was simply trying to travel safely aboard a commercial flight.”
The prosecutor’s message and the FBI’s involvement
The federal attorney emphasized that no passenger should ever have to fear being sexually assaulted during a journey, stressing that the verdict sends a clear message of accountability to those who exploit vulnerable individuals. The case was also addressed by Ted E. Docks, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Boston field office, who called the verdict a vindication for the 17-year-old and commended the courage she had shown.
“This verdict delivers justice for a young girl who displayed remarkable courage in the aftermath of an appalling act. No one should ever have to endure such harmful and predatory behavior — least of all in a confined, public space where they had every right to feel safe,” he said.
