US-China: Xi’s message on Iran and Taiwan
According to a readout published by the state-run Xinhua news agency, Xi Jinping urged Washington and Tehran to resolve their differences “as soon as possible” through negotiations, seeking an end to the war and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, the Chinese president raised the Taiwan issue directly with Donald Trump, urging him to show “prudence.” Xi expressed hope that Washington would maintain its opposition to “Taiwan independence,” arguing that such a stance could lay a solid foundation for strategic cooperation between the two countries and the further development of Sino-American relations.
Trump calls it an “extraordinary meeting”
For his part, Donald Trump described his meeting with Xi Jinping as “extraordinary.” The remarks came as he addressed reporters shortly before the two leaders boarded Marine One and departed the White House for a brief excursion. The meeting took place in the context of the Chinese president’s visit to Washington, with US-China relations, Taiwan, and the war with Iran forming the central themes of the discussions.
