Turkey is escalating its provocations, with the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs labeling the European Parliament and other EU institutions as “tools of Greek Cypriot propaganda.” Ankara launched this attack in response to an opinion issued by the European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality regarding the European Union’s 2027 budget.
New provocation from Turkey: The Turkish Foreign Ministry’s statement
Turkey is accusing the Cypriot government of “distorting and politicizing” historical events, while simultaneously charging that the European Union’s institutions, rather than contributing to a resolution of the Cyprus issue, are being turned into “tools of Greek Cypriot propaganda.”
The full written statement from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as reported by CNN Türk, reads: “It has come to our attention that the European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, in its opinion on the EU’s 2027 budget, recommended the allocation of resources for a monument to be constructed by the Greek Cypriot Administration with the aim of defaming the Turkish Armed Forces.
The Turkish Armed Forces, through the Peace Operation in Cyprus in 1974, prevented the annihilation of the Turkish Cypriot people and brought peace to the entire island for more than half a century. The claims put forward by the Greek Cypriot side distort and politicize historical facts.
The fact that EU institutions, rather than contributing to a resolution of the Cyprus issue, are deviating from the principles of neutrality and fairness and becoming tools of Greek Cypriot propaganda further undermines trust between the two communities. We call on EU officials not to become instruments of those who seek, at every turn, to distance Turkey from the EU.”
