The Iranian military announced on Sunday, August 16, that it would offer cash rewards for the capture or killing of American soldiers. Specifically, an Iranian man who succeeds in doing so will receive €30,000, while an Iranian woman will be paid double that amount. According to Amir Hatami, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, there are many individuals who “wish to contribute financially,” which led to this decision, as reported by the IRNA news agency.
“Anyone who kills or captures and delivers an American military invader to the armed forces of the Islamic Republic will receive a reward of 30,000 — that is, five million tomans,” the announcement stated. The toman is an informal Iranian currency unit equivalent to 10,000 rials. Notably, the term “invader” refers specifically to a violation of Iranian territory. The United States has not conducted any ground operations in Iran, with the exception of a pilot rescue mission in April.
“Brave Iranian women who carry out such an act should receive double the reward,” Hatami further specified.
