US President Donald Trump announced that Iran and the United States held “all-day negotiations” on Tuesday (August 4), stating that talks “went very well,” while simultaneously threatening to strike Iran “very hard” if no deal is reached.
Axios, citing two regional sources and a US official, reports that a 60-day interim agreement on the Strait of Hormuz between the US, Oman, and Iran is being discussed and could be announced within hours. The deal, which has been under negotiation for several weeks, aims to restart talks toward a broader nuclear agreement.
Trump: We had “all-day negotiations” with Iran
Speaking on Fox News, President Trump declared: “The Strait is going to be open very soon, or they’re going to get hit very hard, and then the Strait is going to be open. We control the Strait totally — it’s partially open anyway.” He also emphasized: “Iran will never get nuclear weapons. They already can’t, but it will be made official.”

He continued: “We were going to launch a tremendous attack — the biggest since World War II — and they called me, very nicely, and said, ‘Please, can we talk? Can we talk?’ And I said, ‘Yes, we can talk. Let’s do it. Finally, let’s do it.'”

Trump added: “If they back out again, they will be hit very hard — they know that, they understand that.” The US president went on to warn: “They wouldn’t be talking if we hadn’t done what we did. We hit them very, very hard, but the really hard hit hasn’t come yet — and I hope we don’t have to do it. I hope we don’t…” On the economic front, Trump said: “All costs are coming down now. Food, supermarket goods — everything is going down. I think we should be given an A+ on the economy.” On gas prices, he stated: “We’re going to get down to $3 a gallon, and maybe even $2, very soon.”

The US president also referenced Venezuela, saying: “We’re making hundreds of billions of dollars,” and added that “Venezuela is thriving following the American operation.”
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the negotiations with Iran and Oman as showing “progress” on Tuesday. “No final deal has been reached yet,” he said, but “we hope that will happen very soon.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also spoke to CNBC, suggesting a deal to “reopen the Strait” could be finalized “today or tomorrow” — meaning Tuesday or Wednesday.
Qatar, which is serving as a mediator alongside Pakistan and Oman, also weighed in. Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari stated that efforts are “ongoing” to find a “short-term solution that would allow dialogue to resume.”
