The German government will purchase American long-range Tomahawk missiles, as announced by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. He assured that Germany will continue working toward the development of European weapons systems. By acquiring the Tomahawk missiles, “we are closing a significant strategic gap in our defense,” the Chancellor stated before parliament as part of a government address on “the political situation” in the country.

Friedrich Merz: “Germany will continue working toward the development of European systems”
It is worth recalling that at the 2024 NATO summit, Joe Biden had pledged the deployment of Tomahawk missiles in Germany, though negotiations over the purchase of the systems followed. “At the same time,” Merz emphasized, “Germany will continue working toward the development of European systems and their deployment across Europe.” Commenting on the outcomes of the NATO summit in Ankara, Friedrich Merz described the results as exceeding “all his expectations,” declaring: “NATO is united, strong, and self-confident.”
“We are facing fundamental reforms”
“We are facing fundamental reforms. We have a substantial package of measures ahead of us,” Merz stressed, referring to the measures he announced. He acknowledged, however, that “we must not abandon our efforts and must do even better.”
Finally, addressing criticism over ineffectiveness, he argued that the reforms are delivering results and accused extremist forces of undermining the country and “promoting supposedly easy solutions.” “Radical forces, whether from the left or the right, that focus primarily on describing problems, talking down the country, and offering supposedly easy solutions, exist in many democracies, including our own.
But we are strong enough to collectively reject these attacks on our freedom and our country’s stability. These solutions may sound tempting, but they do not shape the future — they only destroy it,” Merz said.
