Passengers aboard a small aircraft in Alaska experienced terrifying moments after the plane’s engine failed, forcing pilot of the Cessna Caravan to perform an emergency landing in a remote area of the Brooks Range. One of the passengers captured the harrowing incident on video, showing dramatic footage from inside the cabin as well as images taken after the landing, with survivors waiting for rescue.
The emergency landing in Alaska
The Wright Air Service aircraft had departed from Coldfoot en route to Anaktuvuk Pass when the engine began experiencing problems. According to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, the plane was unable to maintain the required altitude.
There were nine passengers and the pilot on board. Remarkably, none of the passengers sustained injuries, while the pilot suffered only a minor cut to his lip. A search aircraft located all 10 individuals, and a helicopter transported them back to Coldfoot.
Engine failure under investigation
Local authorities believe the incident was caused by an engine malfunction, though no further details have been released. Investigators will examine the engine to determine whether this was an isolated failure or a defect that could potentially affect other aircraft of the same type.
