Belgium recorded its hottest day since meteorological records began today, with temperatures expected to climb even higher in the days ahead. A weather station in Brussels measured an afternoon temperature of 34.6°C (94.3°F), shattering a temperature record that had stood for 50 years.

Belgium heatwave: Fans and air conditioners vanishing from store shelves
According to Belgian media reports, the heatwave is driving a surge in demand for fans and air conditioning units, which are rapidly disappearing from store shelves across the country.

Forecasts indicate that temperatures in some parts of the country could reach as high as 40°C (104°F) in the coming days. The national meteorological service has issued a red alert — the country’s highest warning level — for extreme heat in two eastern provinces for tomorrow. The heatwave is not limited to Belgium, as several Western European countries are experiencing unprecedented temperatures for the month of June.
