A fire in Madrid caused widespread alarm on Tuesday afternoon when smoke began billowing from a 49-story skyscraper located in the Spanish capital’s financial district. The building, which houses energy company Moeve, was immediately evacuated as large numbers of firefighters and police rushed to the scene to tackle the incident and ensure the safety of workers and residents in the area. Despite the severity of the situation — with thick plumes of smoke visible from miles away — local authorities announced that there were no injuries, bringing relief after the first dramatic reports emerged.

Madrid fire: The immediate evacuation of the skyscraper
According to eyewitnesses, smoke was detected inside the building before the alarm systems had even been triggered. One employee reported seeing and smelling smoke just minutes before the evacuation process began, while another witness described having to walk down 34 floors on foot in order to reach safety. Images circulated in international media showed smoke pouring from the middle levels of the building, causing alarm among both workers and local residents.

Eyewitness accounts and the emergency response
An employee from a neighboring building described scenes of tension, but also of calm. According to him, most workers reacted swiftly by following the safety procedures they had been trained in during previous evacuation drills. “People were running, but there was a sense of calm,” he said, noting that hundreds of individuals were evacuated from buildings across the area.
Firefighters arrived quickly with a large force and managed to bring the blaze under control. The structural integrity and safety of the skyscraper were thoroughly assessed before any re-entry was permitted. Spanish authorities emphasized that their priority was the protection of human life and the prevention of further risk. Early reports of three individuals still believed to be inside the building caused particular concern. Rescue teams were mobilized immediately, and searches continued until their exact status could be confirmed.

One of Spain’s most iconic skyscrapers
The skyscraper where the fire broke out is known as Torre Foster and is one of Madrid’s most recognizable landmarks. Since 2016, it has been owned by Pontegadea, the company of businessman Amancio Ortega, founder of the Inditex group, following its acquisition for approximately €490 million. Standing 248 meters tall across 49 floors, it ranks among the tallest skyscrapers in Spain and forms part of the Cuatro Torres Business Area — one of the country’s most significant financial hubs.
