The fatal collision and fire at the scene
Initial reports indicate that the two helicopters collided in mid-air before falling into a parking lot on Avenida das Américas, in Recreio dos Bandeirantes. The crash caused a fire that destroyed approximately 20 vehicles.
Rio de Janeiro Police announced that the case is being investigated by the 42nd Police Station (Recreio dos Bandeirantes). An inspection was conducted at the scene, while authorities continue investigations to clarify the causes of the tragedy.
The Fire Department, CET (Traffic Engineering Company), Comlurb, and forces from the 31st Police Station are participating in the operation, having cordoned off the area for safety reasons.
Authorities’ investigation into the tragedy
The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) announced that it was mobilized through the Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA). Specialists from the Third Regional Section (SERIPA III), based in Rio de Janeiro, began collecting evidence and confirming data for the two helicopters involved, with registration numbers PP-MAC and PR-DJJ. Investigators are applying specialized techniques to preserve evidence, record damage, and gather information that will help in the complete investigation of the accident.
In its statement, the Civil Aviation Authority (Anac) expressed condolences to the families and friends of the victims. It also reported that it is examining the status of the helicopters and pilots involved, while the investigation of the causes has been assigned to CENIPA. Anac also emphasized the importance of general aviation flight passengers checking company and aircraft licensing before boarding.
Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere stated that “foreign nationals were aboard one of the two helicopters,” without providing further details. Fire department spokesman Fabio Contreiras told CNN Brasil that the exact circumstances of the accident are not yet known.
One helicopter engulfed in flames was found among electric vehicles, with five victims inside, and the other, which crashed about 100 meters away, was carrying only its pilot, who also died, he said. A large cloud of black smoke rose above the car dealership, where many vehicles were burning, according to images broadcast by local media.
