Serious concerns about the progression of the Ebola virus epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo are being expressed by top officials of the World Health Organization (WHO). A WHO specialist warned that many unexplored outbreak hotspots (“blind spots”) still exist in the region, making it impossible to accurately determine the true magnitude and actual spread of the disease.

“There are still many ‘blind spots’ in certain areas that pose a high risk,” said Olivier le Polain, a WHO epidemiologist in Beni in eastern DR Congo, adding: “In these areas, surveillance really needs to be strengthened.”
