At least twelve people were wounded during a local festival in the small city of Toledo, Ohio, when gunfire suddenly erupted at the venue. The incident occurred during the Old West End Festival, a two-day local festival featuring outdoor markets, concerts, exhibitions and events.
Ohio shooting: Two victims in critical condition
The Toledo Police Department reported that officers responded to the scene after receiving a call about a shooting victim near the festival grounds, where they discovered “multiple” casualties.
“Twelve people were shot,” two of whom are in critical condition, Toledo Police Deputy Chief Joseph Heffernan told the press.
According to Police Officer Dan Gerken, most victims were around twenty years old. “I’ve been to many crime scenes, but this was truly something unusual,” he noted.
Gunmen remain at large
According to initial reports, at least two people opened fire – “likely shooting at each other,” but no suspects have been arrested so far.
Authorities are taking statements from eyewitnesses, seeking information and examining videos recorded by witnesses on their cell phones to understand exactly what happened and apprehend the suspects.
In the United States, there are more firearms in circulation than residents, and access to them, or acquiring them, is typically an easy matter.
The country records thousands of deaths annually from violent incidents involving weapons – more than any other economically developed nation, not even counting suicides.
