New military operations against targets in Iran were carried out by the United States, according to an American official, while negotiations continue to end the conflict that began three months ago in the Middle East. The attacks reportedly targeted a military facility considered a threat to American forces and the security of commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The same official, speaking anonymously to Reuters, stated that American forces detected and shot down several Iranian drones, which were assessed as dangerous to military units and commercial ships in the broader region. Meanwhile, two other American officials said that Iran launched four one-way attack drones against American and commercial ships earlier in the day.

Gulf tensions: American fighter jets shot down Iranian drones near Bandar Abbas
American fighter aircraft including F/A-18 Hornets, F-16 Fighting Falcons, and F-35 Lightning IIs shot down the drones, while subsequently American F/A-18s struck a drone control station near the city of Bandar Abbas, before it could launch a fifth unmanned aircraft. American officials maintained that the operations were limited and defensive in nature and do not constitute an escalation that could collapse the fragile ceasefire. According to the same sources, there were no casualties during the incidents.
Earlier, the Iranian news agency Fars had reported that three explosions were heard east of the port city of Bandar Abbas around 1:30 AM local time. According to the report, air defense systems were activated for several minutes, while Iranian authorities began an investigation to determine the source of the explosions.
Bandar Abbas is the capital of Hormuzgan province and is considered one of Iran’s main operational centers in the Gulf region. Earlier this week, Iranian media also reported explosions in the area, speaking of exchanges of fire with the US military. Tehran accused Washington of violating the ceasefire in effect since early April.
These attacks, which had not been made public earlier, are recorded during a period of negotiations to end a three-month war that has caused thousands of deaths and contributed to a significant rise in global energy prices since it began on February 28 with attacks by the US and Israel.
