During a period of intense escalation in geopolitical tensions, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen launched scathing criticism against Moscow during an official visit to Vilnius, Lithuania. The head of the Commission took a clear stance regarding a series of concerning developments that have kept Baltic countries in constant alert.
Ursula von der Leyen levels serious charges against Moscow over European democracy destabilization scheme
Von der Leyen directly accused Russia of orchestrating the surge in recent air raid alerts, which were triggered by potential hostile violations through drones in EU member states’ airspace. She argued that the Kremlin is using these unmanned aircraft as instruments of psychological warfare, aimed at terrorizing and destabilizing the democratic societies of the European Union. During her statements, made before the presidents of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, von der Leyen emphasized: “Air raid sirens, families in shelters, schools closing, transport disrupted. This is the reality at Europe’s eastern borders in 2026“.
She added that these actions are not isolated incidents but part of a destabilization strategy implemented by Russia. However, she stressed that, like on the battlefields of Ukraine, similar attempts are failing. Her statements were made during a press conference, according to relevant briefing from ANA-MPA.
