The first wave of measures to tackle the “energy storm” sweeping across Europe will be announced today by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Cabinet Meeting set to begin at 11:00 a.m.

Mitsotakis chairs cabinet meeting with focus on reforms and formalizing key announcements
Today’s agenda is packed, as the government is determined both to accelerate reforms and to swiftly formalize the measures announced by Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Thessaloniki International Fair. The political narrative being built by the Prime Minister’s office, amid soaring energy prices across nearly all sectors, is that the government is broadly strengthening household incomes — both directly and indirectly — by leveraging the country’s economic growth.
“The €4 billion income support measures announced at the two Thessaloniki International Fairs — this year and last — carry permanent characteristics designed to address the impact of the global energy crisis,” government sources stressed, adding: “Had we followed the opposition’s advice — which at the start of the crisis urged us to ‘give everything upfront, cut both the excise duty and VAT’ with no costing whatsoever — there would not have been a single cent left to provide citizens in the coming period, when additional support is needed due to developments in the Middle East.”
Yesterday, Prime Minister Mitsotakis visited the Special Coordination Service of the Recovery Fund, where he attended the electronic submission of the final payment requests to the European Commission for grants and loans owed to Greece, totaling €36 billion. “We succeeded, and the biggest winners are the Greek people, who can see that not a single euro was lost. We also gave the best possible answer to those — both inside and outside Greece — who doubted our ability to absorb these funds,” Mitsotakis said.
Mitsotakis: Measures to address energy costs and intervention on fuel prices
Announcements regarding heating oil will be made on October 14, one day before the start of its distribution. On fuel, the existing diesel subsidy (€0.10 per liter) will continue through October — however, the latest information suggests this amount will be increased to €0.15 per liter, a change that will take effect immediately starting tomorrow for drivers of diesel-powered vehicles.
Cabinet meeting: Public sector hiring plan for 2027
Today’s cabinet meeting will also approve — following a proposal by Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios and Deputy Interior Minister Vivi Charalambogianni — the scheduled recruitment of permanent staff and salaried-mandate personnel for the full year of 2027. According to sources, the number of hirings planned for next year within the fiscal constraint of a 1:1 ratio (one hire for every one departure), excluding teachers and revenue-generating services, is estimated at approximately 16,600. Priority will be given to Health, Defense, the Fire Service, the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), and the Social Security Fund (EFKA), in order to meet their staffing needs.
