Work continues on the Thessaloniki Metro extension to Kalamaria, which – barring any unforeseen circumstances – will be delivered for operation at the end of July, as emphasized by Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas, following a meeting with the leadership of “Hellenic Metro” and executives from the contractor consortium. “Over the past 3 months we have really accelerated the pace of work significantly at all 5 stations. We are very satisfied with the progress of the work,” he noted.
Dimas on Thessaloniki Metro: “Certain international certifications are required”
“Testing continues at a very good pace, we have very good results so far and we estimate that during the summer, towards the end of July, the five additional Metro stations will be put into commercial operation,” stated the Infrastructure and Transport Minister. He added that the temporary suspension of Metro operations was necessary to conduct the required tests and issue the necessary international certifications, as the extension to Kalamaria involves connecting two systems. “Small-scale construction work remains and most systems have been fully installed, tested and are operational, but they must be at 100%,” emphasized Mr. Dimas.
What he said about the Flyover
The minister also referred to the Flyover project. “We can now see both concrete forms being poured. This is a pioneering project not only by Thessaloniki or Greek standards, it’s an innovative project by European standards, which will really help the smoother flow of traffic in the city of Thessaloniki and beyond. The target regarding the timeline doesn’t change, it’s about a year from now and a little less.
From then on I think that all Thessaloniki residents and visitors who pass daily through the ring road can see the progress of the works and realize the speed with which it’s moving toward completion. Of course we all expect it to be put into operation and be able to relieve traffic congestion even more,” he stated and added that the goal is to deliver it in the first half of 2027.
