Mitsotakis’ intervention at the 16th New Democracy Congress
“I would like to thank Manfred Weber for his presence today. There is European recognition of our country’s progress, which gives us strength and enthusiasm. Greece will be at the forefront of discussions on decisions, on strategic autonomy, defense, the budget. In these discussions, Greece will be present to support a strong Europe. I want to thank you for committing that sister parties will support Akyla’s presence at Eurovision today. Although we are competitive in this with our sister Cyprus at Eurovision, I would like to thank you.”
In his intervention, the prime minister, addressing the president of Cyprus, said that the recognition of the very close ties between Greece and Cyprus as a result of Greece’s natural support for the Republic of Cyprus, I believe, acted as a catalyst so that the spiritual bonds between Greece and Cyprus have never been stronger than they are now. And this is something that gives us great joy. We cooperate excellently, you are right to say that the level of relations has never been better. We have very important initiatives to undertake jointly within the framework of important discussions within Europe. You know that Greece is Cyprus’ most important supporter for resolving the Cyprus issue. We will be present again to finally close this wound that has afflicted Hellenism for 52 years.
Subsequently, addressing party representatives, he noted: “We have disagreements, we must have disagreements, but we are not enemies. We are opponents. New Democracy will insist on discourse that promotes healthy confrontation of ideas. All parties have opponents in society’s problems, and in this upgraded political discourse, our faction will persist on the path to elections.”
The prime minister, concluding his intervention, pointed out that Greece will assume the presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2027, and certainly Greek citizens in the 2027 elections will choose which prime minister and which government can represent the country in this very important European obligation.
