The National Park in the Delta of the Evros River was visited by the President of the Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas, who characterized it as impressive and unparalleled. At the same time, he emphasized: “Greek borders are in good hands and no one, absolutely no one, can challenge them. We proved this during the crisis of February-March 2020. And we are certain that whenever needed again, we will prove it just as effectively.”
“The visit here, to the Evros Delta, fills me with admiration. Admiration for the unparalleled beauty of nature, this unique, invaluable wetland. But also admiration for the dynamism of our border guards. All those who are entrusted with protecting our borders. The Greek army, the Hellenic Police, as well as the private individuals who fish in the Evros Delta, keep their eyes open daily to protect this invaluable area,” Mr. Tasoulas said and added:
“We are, as a State, determined to preserve this ecological treasure, which, at the same time, constitutes a border of our country ‘to the East.’ And this border of our country ‘to the East,’ towards Turkey, there is no possibility that it will escape our attention, our interest, our surveillance. Greek borders are in good hands. And no one, absolutely no one, can challenge them. We proved this during the crisis of February-March 2020. And we are certain that whenever needed again, we will prove it just as effectively.”
Tasoulas’ visit to the Evros Delta
The President of the Republic boarded a Hellenic Police vessel, which conducts patrols in the labyrinthine routes of the Evros Delta, accompanied by floating units of the Greek army, which also conduct patrols. He toured the river estuary, saw fishermen’s huts and was impressed by the unique beauty of the natural environment.
The Evros Delta wetland stands out for its rich biodiversity, with hundreds of bird species, such as flamingos, pelicans and herons. It is protected by international conventions (Ramsar, Natura 2000) and constitutes an important area for ecotourism, bird watching and environmental education. The President of the Republic disembarked at the Service Hut, in the Ainisio Delta, where he was hosted. At the same time, he was briefed on the surveillance and guarding of the Greek-Turkish borders by the army and police using the most modern technology.

Mr. Tasoulas was accompanied by the commander of the Supreme Military Administration of Thrace, Lieutenant General Panagiotis Kavidopoulos, the commander of the XII Division, Major General Pavlos Andrikopoulos, the commander of the 31st Mechanized Brigade, Brigadier General Sotiris Tsiatsiakis and the General Police Director of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Brigadier General Lambros Tsiaras. The president of the “Ainisio Delta” Association, Nikos Mousounakis, welcomed Mr. Tasoulas and thanked him for his visit to the area on behalf of the fishermen who live in huts or work in the Delta.
