Defence Minister Nikos Dendias visited the border island of Agathonisi today, sending a message of stability and determination. The Defence Minister inaugurated new military housing as part of a program providing 17,000 homes across the country, with priority given to Evros and the islands.

Dendias emphasized that “all Greek islands, regardless of size, possess the rights provided by international law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.” He noted that Greece seeks stability and good neighborly relations, but “will not accept revisionist approaches that attempt to challenge what is self-evident.”

He also addressed the incident involving the Ukrainian drone discovered in Lefkada, calling the matter “particularly serious” and noting that he awaits the explanations that the Ukrainian Defence Minister has committed to provide. “The vessel carried explosives and endangered maritime navigation. One doesn’t need to imagine what a collision with a passenger or commercial ship would mean,” he stated.
The minister emphasized that Greece will continue to strengthen its deterrent capability while remaining firmly committed to international law and diplomatic channels. The Defence Minister underlined that Greece faces “revisionist ambitions” which, he said, have intensified recently “with claims of non-existent rights.”
Nikos Dendias’s statement:
“We face, and we Greeks know it, revisionist ambitions which are escalating recently with claims of non-existent rights. From here, from Agathonisi, I want to remind once again that all our islands have exactly these rights. Neither more nor less than what is provided in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
I will await with particular interest the explanations that the Ukrainian Defence Minister has committed to provide. This issue is extremely serious. This vessel carried explosives and endangered maritime navigation safety. I don’t want to think about what a collision with a passenger ship or any vessel would mean.”
