Today, May 1st, the “manifesto” for the “convergence of Social Democracy, Radical Left and Political Ecology” is expected to be uploaded to the Tsipras Institute website, developed by an 11-member Position Committee led by sociology professor Giorgos Siakantaris, unless the process is postponed to next week for technical reasons.
This text, titled “The Left of the new era,” spans approximately 15 pages and consists of 8-9 chapters. According to sources, this document, drafted through collaboration between Giorgos Siakantaris with Institute officials and Alexis Tsipras’s close associates, describes how Alexis Tsipras’s movement envisions the Left, what Greek reality looks like after seven years of New Democracy governance, the issue of alliances, the need for “new patriotism,” and strengthening the working class.
This is the position paper that will describe the convergence of social democracy, political ecology, and radical democratic left. As the former prime minister’s associates note, it will essentially serve as an ideological and political foundation focusing on progressive forces’ convergence.
Alexis Tsipras’s proposals: the four pillars of progressive governance
The text analyzes the four pillars of progressive governance: Democracy – rule of law, social justice – new production model, green digital transition with social benefits, universal and quality state in health and education.
Given that the former prime minister has placed the rule of law issue at the center of his political activity, this text is expected to outline Alexis Tsipras’s proposals, which are codified as:
• Criticism of the “Staff State”: Alexis Tsipras contrasts the need for “new patriotism of social justice” against the “lawlessness of the government’s staff state.”
• Focus on Justice: He emphasizes the importance of judicial independence and institutional functioning as guarantees of the rule of law.
Alexis Tsipras’s economic priorities
Regarding the economy, Alexis Tsipras’s priorities will be codified as follows:
A) Effective household support to address living costs and high prices in food, housing, and energy
B) Tax Justice – Substantial reduction of tax burden on wage earners by shifting the tax burden to very high corporate profits and very high incomes.
C) Changing the fiscal mix and utilizing fiscal space that will be created to re-establish the welfare state and support youth.
D) Changing the production model through a strong, developmental, and cooperative state – not clientelist, not corrupt – aimed at shifting toward productive sectors that will strengthen domestic added value.
Tsipras’s proposal for new transparency
Special reference will be made to Alexis Tsipras’s proposal for new Transparency.
This is a proposal that aims to contribute to public debate on enhancing transparency and controlling public money. The goal is to start a fruitful dialogue between experts and citizens to explore technical capabilities and requirements, map prerequisite institutional changes, and achieve maximum social consensus for implementing the proposed project-reform.
According to Alexis Tsipras’s associates, Transparency “is a political choice concerning how the state is accountable to citizens. The project is technically feasible and implementable within a timeframe not exceeding two years. The data exists. The tools exist. The expertise exists. What is required is the political will to transform formal transparency into substantial accountability. Activating TRANSPARENCY signals a qualitative change in the state-citizen relationship.”
